SAKS HOUSE
Gulf Islands, BC : 1981
2500 square feet

This house rises out of the trees, expands up and out, then descends back into the foliage of the surrounding forest. The natural curve of the hillside and sweep of the panorama generate the home's spiral form. A massive tower of local stone encloses the fireplace and pins down the center of the building, while a spiral stair ascending to the lookout tower provides a light counterpoint to the heavy stone.
